Chardonnay
Tumbarumba, New South Wales
Nutty, almost Jura-esque nose, balanced textual palate
2018 was a bit of a wetter year in Tumbarumba, which meant the fruit lacked the typical fresh green apple crunchiness on the palate. To work with this slightly broader palate I let the ferment go in barrel for a while, looking to create a more 'Jura-esque' wine, which focused on a more nutty nose. The palate is very textual and round and is still a great balance between acidity, viscosity and fruit.

Tumbarumba, in the Snowy Mountains of NSW, is an absolutely amazing place to grow cool climate varietals such as Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Steve Morrison took over the old Penfolds vineyard a few years ago and he is a very smart viticulturalist. Located only 3 km from the township of Tumbarumba, Steve’s vineyard is at about 700m altitude.
The wine has been fermented and then matured on lees in new French barriques for 18 months, creating a style of Chardonnay that is rich, textual and voluptuous with a lingering acid line.
The nose is a mix of stonefruit, honey and bready – yeasty characters while the palate is tight and austere with an incredible length and balance.
It is an amazingly delicate and subtle wine, full of white peach and flint, and the small amount of malo-lactic fermentation (10%) has added a richness and structure that fills out the palate.
